Business Coach for Tradies

You are brilliant on the tools. Then the sun goes down and you become the estimator, the bookkeeper, the HR department and the bloke chasing an invoice from March. If that sounds like your week, you are in the right place.

Mr Purple offers business coaching for tradies and trade business owners who want the business behind the work to be as solid as the work itself.

Sound familiar?

  • You quote at night and on Sundays
  • Every job decision still comes back to your phone
  • Busy months, then a quiet patch that eats the profit
  • Good apprentices leave just as they get useful
  • You are turning over more and somehow taking home less

Why trade businesses get stuck

Most trade businesses grow because the owner is good at the trade. That is a fine start and a terrible operating model. The owner becomes the bottleneck for quoting, scheduling, quality and cash, and the business can only grow as far as one person can stretch.

The fix is rarely working harder. It is deciding what only you should do, and building simple systems so everything else happens without you standing over it.

What we work on with tradies

Quoting that does not eat your evenings. A simple, repeatable way to price and follow up, so quotes go out faster and convert better.

A pipeline that is not feast or famine. Knowing where the next three months of work is coming from, and doing a little every week to keep it full.

A crew that owns its work. Clear roles, a short weekly huddle and standards people can actually see, so you stop being the only quality check.

Numbers you can read on a phone. A handful of weekly numbers, such as quotes out, jobs won, cash in the bank and money owed, looked at every week without dread.

Your own time. Getting off the tools on purpose, a bit at a time, if that is what you want.

Where to start this week

  • Write down every task you did last week, then circle the ones only you can do
  • Pick one quote template and use it for every job this month
  • Hold a ten minute Monday huddle with the crew: jobs, risks, who owns what
  • Check money owed every Friday, not when the bank balance gives you a fright

How coaching works at Mr Purple

We start with discovery: how the business really runs, not how it looks on the van. Then we find the cause behind the loudest problem and agree a few actions with named owners. Between sessions we check progress against evidence, so things actually move. If you want to understand the difference between this and hiring a consultant, our guide to business coach vs consultant vs mentor lays it out.

Bring one business wobble

Fifteen honest minutes with Dr Tom Hitchcock. Bring the problem you cannot quite name. No surprise proposal ambush and no hard sell. If coaching is not the right move, Tom will tell you, and usually point you somewhere useful.

Business Coach for Tradies: questions people ask

Do tradies really need a business coach?
Not always. If you are happy as a one person operation with steady work, you may not. Coaching helps when the business has outgrown the way you run it, usually when you have a crew, more work than time, and less profit than you expected.
Can you coach me if you have never been a tradie?
Yes. Tom coaches the business side: priorities, people, pricing, cash and your time. You stay the expert on the trade. The business problems that trip up trade businesses are the same ones that trip up most owner run businesses.
Is coaching done on site or online?
Mostly online, which suits people who spend the day on site. We are based in Sydney and meet in person where it genuinely helps.
How much does business coaching cost?
It depends on the scope. Our guide to what a business coach costs in Australia explains how to think about it, and a 15 minute call will tell you whether it is worth having the conversation.

We also offer business coaching for particular sectors where Tom has deep experience: business coaching for NDIS providers, business coaching for aged care leaders and business coaching for allied health practice owners.
