Small Business Owner Burnout Signs

Business owners are famously bad at noticing their own burnout. The business keeps running, so surely everything is fine. Meanwhile you are answering emails at midnight and snapping at the coffee machine.

Here are the signs worth watching for, and the business changes that take the pressure off at the source.

Please look after the person first

If you recognise several of these signs, talk to your GP. Burnout affects health, and support is available. In Australia, Beyond Blue and Lifeline are there around the clock. A business coach is not a substitute for any of that. If you are in crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 000 in an emergency.

The business causes behind owner burnout

Burnout in owners often has business causes that can be changed: the business depends on one person, there are no clear priorities so everything feels urgent, cash is tight so every week feels like a cliff edge, and the team is not set up to make decisions without you.

Business changes that take the pressure off

Hand over decisions, not just tasks. Our guide to delegating as a business owner shows how.

Three priorities, not thirty. A short list makes it easier to say no and easier to feel progress.

A weekly cash view. Uncertainty about money is exhausting. Knowing the number, even when it is not great, is calmer than guessing. See cash flow problems in small business.

Protected time off. Diary it like a client meeting and plan the cover in advance.

Resign from some jobs. The free Owner’s Resignation Letter helps you choose which ones.

Small Business Owner Burnout Signs: questions people ask

What causes burnout in small business owners?
Usually a mix of long hours, constant decisions, financial pressure and the feeling that everything depends on you. The business set up often makes it worse, which is why changing the business helps.
Can a business coach help with burnout?
A coach can help change the business conditions that feed it, such as workload, delegation, priorities and cash visibility. Health support should come from your GP or a qualified health professional.
How do I take a break when the business depends on me?
Start small. Plan a single day away, decide who covers what, and see what breaks. Each break shows you what to fix so the next one can be longer.
Is burnout a sign I should sell or close?
Not necessarily. Many owners recover their energy once the business stops depending on them for everything. Make big decisions once you have had some rest and good advice.

We also offer business coaching for particular sectors where Tom has deep experience: business coaching for NDIS providers, business coaching for aged care leaders and business coaching for allied health practice owners.
