Accountability Coach for Business Owners

Most business owners do not lack ideas. They lack follow through, usually because nobody is waiting to ask how it went. An accountability coach is that somebody.

At Mr Purple accountability is built into the coaching: agreed actions, owned by named people, checked against evidence. Kindly, but properly.

Sound familiar?

  • Your to do list is mostly last month’s to do list
  • Big plans at the start of the quarter, quiet abandonment by week three
  • You are great at keeping promises to clients and terrible at keeping them to yourself
  • Strategy days that produce lovely notes and no change

What an accountability coach does

An accountability coach helps you set clear commitments, then checks in on them regularly. The best ones do more than ask whether you did it. They help you work out why something did not happen, and change the system so it happens next time.

Why accountability works

Saying a commitment out loud to another person changes how seriously you take it. A regular check in also catches drift early, when it is easy to correct. And looking at evidence, rather than how busy you felt, keeps everyone honest, including the coach.

How we build accountability that lasts

Few, clear actions. Three specific actions beat fifteen vague ones every time.

Named owners and dates. Not the team will look into it. A person, a result and a day.

Evidence, not effort. We look at what changed, not how hard it felt.

No blame. When something slips we look at why, using the same thinking as blameless reporting. Shame does not improve follow through; better systems do.

Accountability for the team too. A weekly meeting rhythm so your people hold themselves to their commitments without you chasing. See how to run a team meeting effectively.

Try it yourself this week

  • Write three actions for this week, each with a finish line
  • Tell one person what they are
  • Ask them to check in on Friday
  • On Friday, look at what happened and note one thing to change

What accountability is not

It is not nagging, micromanaging or a weekly telling off. If an accountability arrangement leaves you feeling small, it will not last, and neither will the results. Good accountability feels more like a supportive training partner: someone who expects you to turn up, notices when you do and helps you work out what got in the way when you do not. Over time the aim is for you and your team to hold yourselves to account, with the coach there to keep the habit honest.

Bring one business wobble

Fifteen honest minutes with Dr Tom Hitchcock. Bring the problem you cannot quite name. No surprise proposal ambush and no hard sell. If coaching is not the right move, Tom will tell you, and usually point you somewhere useful.

Accountability Coach for Business Owners: questions people ask

What is an accountability coach?
Someone who helps you set clear commitments and then checks progress with you regularly, so goals turn into results. In business coaching it sits alongside priorities, people and numbers.
Is an accountability coach different from a business coach?
An accountability coach focuses mainly on follow through. A business coach covers follow through plus strategy, leadership, sales and numbers. Mr Purple coaching includes accountability as standard.
How often are check ins?
Typically a session every fortnight or month, with short check ins in between, so commitments never go more than a week or so without a look.
What does an accountability coach cost?
It depends on the format and frequency. See business coach cost in Australia for how to think about value.

We also offer business coaching for particular sectors where Tom has deep experience: business coaching for NDIS providers, business coaching for aged care leaders and business coaching for allied health practice owners.
